Deviations from Linear Theory for Fluctuations below the Supercritical Primary Bifurcation to Electroconvection
We report measurements of thermally-induced mean-square director-angle
fluctuations below primary supercritical bifurcations to
electroconvection of the nematic liquid crystals I52 and "Merck Phase V". For
epsilon_mf = V^2/V_c,mf^2 - 1 < -0.1 (V is the amplitude of the applied
alternating voltage) we find proportional to epsilon_mf^(-gamma) with
gamma given by linear theory (LT). Closer to the bifurcation there are
deviations from LT with a smaller gamma and with V_c^2 > V_c,mf^2. For I52
measurements as a function of the conductivity sigma of above V_c^2
suggest a tricritical bifurcation at sigma_t = 4.0 x 10^(-9) Omega^(-1)m^(-1),
and (V_c^2 - V_c,mf^2)/V_c^2 increases strongly as sigma_t is approached from
above.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Coefficient of restitution for wet particles
The influence of a wetting liquid on the coefficient of restitution (COR) is
investigated experimentally by tracing freely falling particles bouncing on a
wet surface. The dependence of the COR on the impact velocity and various
properties of the particle and the wetting liquid is presented and discussed in
terms of dimensionless numbers that characterize the interplay between
inertial, viscous, and surface forces. In the Reynolds number regime where the
lubrication theory does not apply, the ratio of the film thickness to the
particle size is found to be a crucial parameter determining the COR.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figure
Flavor-Mixing Effects on the QCD Phase Diagram at non-vanishing Isospin Chemical Potential: One or Two Phase Transitions?
We investigate effects of a fixed nonzero isospin chemical potential on the
mu_B-T phase diagram of strongly interacting matter using a
Nambu--Jona-Lasinio-type four fermion interaction. We focus on the influence of
a flavor-mixing interaction induced by instantons. We find that already for
rather moderate values of the coupling strength in the flavor-mixing channel
the recent findings of two seperate phase transitions do not persist.Comment: 7 pages, 2 ps figure
Reference point insensitive molecular data analysis
Motivation: In biomedicine, every molecular measurement is relative to a reference point, like a fixed aliquot of RNA extracted from a tissue, a defined number of blood cells, or a defined volume of biofluid. Reference points are often chosen for practical reasons. For example, we might want to assess the metabolome of a diseased organ but can only measure metabolites in blood or urine. In this case, the observable data only indirectly reflects the disease state. The statistical implications of these discrepancies in reference points have not yet been discussed. Results: Here, we show that reference point discrepancies compromise the performance of regression models like the LASSO. As an alternative, we suggest zero-sum regression for a reference point insensitive analysis. We show that zero-sum regression is superior to the LASSO in case of a poor choice of reference point both in simulations and in an application that integrates intestinal microbiome analysis with metabolomics. Moreover, we describe a novel coordinate descent based algorithm to fit zero-sum elastic nets
Dyson-Schwinger Equations: Density, Temperature and Continuum Strong QCD
Continuum strong QCD is the application of models and continuum quantum field
theory to the study of phenomena in hadronic physics, which includes; e.g., the
spectrum of QCD bound states and their interactions; and the transition to, and
properties of, a quark gluon plasma. We provide a contemporary perspective,
couched primarily in terms of the Dyson-Schwinger equations but also making
comparisons with other approaches and models. Our discourse provides a
practitioners' guide to features of the Dyson-Schwinger equations [such as
confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking] and canvasses
phenomenological applications to light meson and baryon properties in cold,
sparse QCD. These provide the foundation for an extension to hot, dense QCD,
which is probed via the introduction of the intensive thermodynamic variables:
chemical potential and temperature. We describe order parameters whose
evolution signals deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration, and chronicle
their use in demarcating the quark gluon plasma phase boundary and
characterising the plasma's properties. Hadron traits change in an equilibrated
plasma. We exemplify this and discuss putative signals of the effects. Finally,
since plasma formation is not an equilibrium process, we discuss recent
developments in kinetic theory and its application to describing the evolution
from a relativistic heavy ion collision to an equilibrated quark gluon plasma.Comment: 103 Pages, LaTeX, epsfig. To appear in Progress in Particle and
